His first thought upon waking up was that he really needed to stop doing this.

The pounding in his head made it hard to concentrate, not that there was much to see. As the bag still covered his face. He tried to suppress his groan as he listened to his surroundings.

All he could hear were the sounds of dripping water on stone. Aside from his own, he couldn’t hear any other breathing or movement. Was he alone? Would Augustus be able to find him? Arthur winced at the thought of the rat mutant running around the city in search of him, potentially leaving Nyssa alone.

She was smart, though. Plus, Jemima and Dylan would be there to help her with the stall. Also, as a clerk, she could manage sales until he got back. If he got back. He shook his head to dismiss that thought, which caused the pain to double. However, he bore it without complaint.

Thoughts like that wouldn’t help him, even with how scared he was.

Arthur could feel his heart racing, and he couldn’t stop shivering. In the books he’d read, the heroes were always calm. They would pretend to be unconscious or try to glare through the bag. He wished he could be like that.

Though, being honest, he mostly wished none of this had happened.

A creak filled the room. Wooden. A door opening? He tried to stay still, but he knew they’d see him shaking. Footsteps on stone, before his kidnappers ripped the bag roughly off his head.

“Why, hello there?”

The sight of the expressionless woman that stood in front of him struck Arthur dumb.

Every part of her appearance screamed that she belonged to a crime family. Elbow-length gloves covered her hands, which rested on a violin case. Slender fingers stroked the leather in small patterns.

Her black cocktail dress, though patched and worn, remained elegant when wrapped around her lithe form. While not bearing the same figure Nyssa possessed, her tanned athletic frame was hardly displeasing to the eye. Purple eyes, framed by long black strands of hair, met his own, and the thin eyebrow arched up.

At the twitch of her black-painted lips, he realized he was supposed to talk. Arthur opened his mouth and was immediately cut off.

“He doesn’t even notice me. Can you believe this, sister? I’m the head of the family, and he’s too busy eye-fucking you to notice my presence.”

A man stepped forward, and it was with a start that Arthur realized he’d been there the entire time.

“The family resemblance is obvious, so actual sister and not a title then,” Arthur thought, as he took in what had to be Riccardo Heady.

He was fit, that was for certain. The white button-up shirt underneath the open vest showed obvious muscle. A demonic horse acted as a buckle, which Arthur assumed was a nod to the nightmare moniker.

One white gloved hand ran through his shaggy black hair, drawing Arthur’s attention to his face. Chiseled was the best way to describe it. Prominent jaw and cheekbones, from which another set of purple eyes watched him.
